ABOUT THE PROJECT

"POETRY IS PAINTING THAT SPEAKS"

–Plutarch

The Geek Girls Poetry Project began in the summer of 2022, when multidisciplinary writer and artist Jen Giacalone procured a reading of a piece of her poetry from Star Trek: Picard actor Michelle Hurd, one inspired by the character Hurd plays in the show. The reading was done so well, that when Jen shared it to her social media, the resounding response was "Wow! I didn't know poetry could be like this!"

Excited, she began pursuing readings from other actors and shows, and as she began to accumulate them, she realized that she had created something that could draw people into poetry who hadn't been interested in it before by showcasing poems celebrating characters they knew, read by actors they loved.

Thus the Geek Girls Poetry Project was born, creating new poetry fans with readings from many of sci-fi's beloved actors.

THE BEAUTY OF THINGS UNSEEN

The first of several planned expansions of this project, "The Beauty of Things Unseen" is a collection of the poetry written for the actors of the Star Trek universe. "The Beauty of Things Unseen" grew organically from the popularity of this project and explores the ways in which so many human desires, struggles, and joys don't change, even over the course of centuries. This book represents a culmination of the first stage of a project with endless, exciting potential.
